Description:
These two cousins, Isla and Riley, seem to be contemplating their future as they gaze at the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean. They’re seated upon a natural rock formation called the Devil’s Rocking Chair. Some claim the devil sits there at night and lights up a smoke, while others say it was so named to scare children away from going too close to the ocean and drowning. Whatever the reason, it is an impressive feature on the rugged coastline of Newfoundland, specifically along a hiking trail in the small outport of Tilting, which is located on Fogo Island.
Fogo is also known for Brimstone Head, a rocky headland that the Flat Earth Society dubiously declares to be one of the four corners of the Earth (the others are in Papua New Guinea, the Bermuda Triangle, and Hyadra in Greece. There’s a sign at the top that warns you are on the corner; otherwise, you might fall off the edge of the world by mistake!
I previously painted another scene of Tilting that I called Ephemeral.
My thanks to Beth Kirby, who took photos of her daughter and nephew in the infamous Chair.
