Description:

This spectacular twin waterfall is encountered along the Approach Trail (Sentier Approach in French) that leads toward Gros Morne Mountain in Gros Morne National Park on the west coast of Newfoundland. The walking trail follows the meandering course of Crow Gulch Brook and is rated moderately difficult. It connects to the Summit Trail, which is rated difficult and leads 500 metres up to the summit of Gros Morne.

Gros Morne is a French (and Creole) name that has variably been interpreted as “big mountain standing alone,” “gloomy mountain,” “large lonely mountain,” or “great sombre.” On an overcast day it can certainly look gloomy.

I hadn’t painted a waterfall before and that made this painting somewhat of a challenge for me. Over time I’ve become adept enough with watercolour that I’m confident I can probably paint anything in that medium. I know that when people first encounter my work, they often think I’m painting in acrylics and disbelieve me when I say they’re watercolours. But no, all my paintings on this website have been done in watercolour. I work in many layers to achieve the realism, depth, and richness of colours and contrast that I want. This is quite different from the classic approach to using watercolours wherein the resulting images have a transparent, almost washed-out look.

I thank my son Jamieson for the reference photo he took in July this year and that I based this painting on; my earlier painting “Glacial Carving” was also based on a photo of his from the same excursion.
