Description:

Accessible only by boat, this delightful home is poised on the water and backed by a high cliff face. It offers scenic views and the opportunity to catch today’s meal from the comfort of the front porch. It’s located in Quidi Vidi Gut, a protected harbor that opens out into the Atlantic ocean. Quidi Vidi Village (commonly pronounced “kiddy-viddy”) was established in the 1600s by cod fishermen from South Devon in England. The Royal St. John’s Regatta is held nearby on Quidi Vidi Lake, which connects to the Gut by a river.

The rock face behind required a full palette of colors to capture all the nuances.

It may seem quiet in this image but it was a busy summer’s day with locals and tourists enjoying the restaurants and walking trails, and many boats going back and forth across the water.

Prior paintings I’ve done of this area include A Day in the Gut, Quidi Vidi Wharf, and Quidi Vidi Gut.

My thanks to my wife Lisa who suggested the title, with haven conveying the sense of a place of refuge and comfort.

ADDENDUM: Just before midnight on July 29, 2025, this historic and colorful fishing stage, plus another to the right (part of its wharf is just visible in this image), burned down to the water. Although firefighters responded promptly, they had no access to these structures by road, and no ability to fight the fire from the water. They could only watch helplessly as the buildings and their accompanying wharves were completely destroyed. The smaller pair to the left were left unscathed as a result of successful efforts to douse them with water.
