Description:
This is a bit of a departure for me, a close-up view of stones and trickling water at Middle Cove Beach in Newfoundland. This is a popular place sometime between mid-June and July each year, when small fish called capelin come in waves (“roll”) onto the shore to spawn. Chasing them are the humpback whales who consider the capelin a tasty treat. During the Annual Capelin Roll — the dates of which are known only to the capelin — people will be casting nets or scooping up capelin by hand or bucket, and carrying them off for a meal. Others will be gazing at the humpback whales, feeding and cavorting further off shore.
I took the reference photo at a quiet time in the spring when there were few people and no capelin around. I was fascinated by the stones, which are quite colorful when you stop to look at them closely. I think I used my full palette on this one; you can see a full spectrum of colors with different hues of blue, red, orange, yellow, green, and even purple, in addition to black and brown contrasts. They look almost surrealistic but they’re all natural.
