Uncrossed Lines
Status of Original Painting – Private Collection
Size: 12 x 20 inches
Medium: Watercolour on 300 lb d’Arches
Description:
This scene captures the colourful buildings of Victoria Street (from the corner of Queen Road) in St. John’s, Newfoundland, as well as a glimpse of the harbour and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Many areas of St. John’s are like this with packed, colourful houses on sharply sloping narrow streets. For those who are unfamiliar with St. John’s, this painting can serve as a reference map for several other paintings on this website. In the distance is the gap between two cliffs, which is The Narrows of St. John’s Harbour (what is glimpsed in The Narrows is the Atlantic Ocean). On the right side of The Narrows is located Fort Amherst and the lighthouse that is depicted in another painting. To the left, atop the cliff is an isolated rectangular building which is Cabot Tower atop Signal Hill, also depicted in another painting. At the bottom of the cliff on the left is the Outer Battery which is also shown in another painting. Finally, Quidi Vidi Gut (depicted in another painting) is well off to the left outside the view in this painting, down in a valley that can be seen from atop Signal Hill.
Compare to “Jelly Bean Houses” for a broader perspective on the colourful buildings that populate the St. John’s landscape.
