Description:
I’ve been long overdue for a winter scene. Part of the reason is that they can be technically less interesting to do in watercolor, since white generally means the absence of paint, allowing the paper to show through. But the other reason is that I usually think of doing a winter scene when I’m in the midst of summer, and then I realize that I’d forgotten to take any interesting reference photos during the prior winter.
This caribou is watching the cars on the Buchans highway in Newfoundland, specifically a portion known by the locals as Sandy Strait. I had a lot of fun doing this one, especially with the dramatic and almost surrealistic snow. This snow scene was very interesting and challenging to capture properly, but the rest of the painting went quickly. My thanks to Krista Rideout who took the reference photo for me during the Christmas break.
