Description:
Another double-rarity for me, a portrait and working solely in black and white. This painting of a breastfeeding woman with her baby is the second of two paintings that will illustrate a forthcoming medical textbook, Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Endocrinology: Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Clinical Management, edited by Christopher S. Kovacs and Cheri L. Deal (Elsevier / Academic Press, 2019). The book is divided into two halves, “The Mother” and “The Child.” This one will be placed after the title page for the second half of the book; it is also featured in small on the back cover. The two paintings can be considered to form a diptych (a painting in two parts or panels).
I’ve donated both original paintings to the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, where they will be displayed in their offices in Ottawa.
My thanks to Janine Woodrow and Dara Squires who brought the reference photo to my attention, Dara for obtaining permission from the photographer Melisa Chaulk for me to use it, and Lisa Dawe for suggesting the title.
Original painting by Christopher Kovacs based with permission on a reference photo by Melisa Chaulk, Happy Valley – Goose Bay, Labrador.
