Description:
“Foraging” is meant as a double-entendre, and so if it isn’t obvious what I mean, then you probably need to have a second or third look at this painting.
This is a frozen moment before sudden action with an uncertain outcome.
I was inspired by the recent death of Richard Adams, who wrote Watership Down, The Plague Dogs, and Shardik. In fact, I was tempted to call this painting “Watership Doom” in honor of him. The snowshoe hare depicted here is one of several who forage outside the windows of my den. We’ve started calling those large windows “Doggie TV” because our dogs are mesmerized by sight of the bunnies outside the window. I took the reference photos for the hare on New Years Day. And for anyone who might doubt that this is a Newfoundland scene, all elements are native.
I thank my wife Susan who suggested the shadowy addition to this painting. (Which is in the upper left, in case you still missed it!)
