Description:

This colorful waterfront scene caught my eye while driving past, and so I had to stop and take reference photos for a future painting.

This is the harbour of Bay Roberts, a town located on Conception Bay in Newfoundland, about 90 km west of the capital city of St. John’s. The harbour was named Baie de Robert in the 16th century by fishermen from Brittany and Normandy. They liked the large protected harbour and the beaches covered in flat rocks that were well suited for laying out and curing fish.

In 1697 the town, by then known as Baye Robert, was destroyed by the French soldier and explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville during King William’s War. But Bay Roberts was rebuilt, became a key part of the cod fishery and seal hunt, and was finally incorporated as The Town of Bay Roberts in 1951. It’s also notable as the town that my wife Lisa is from!

The boat is named Bob’n Around, after its owner Bob Badcock. As soon as I learned the name, I knew it was the perfect title for this painting.
