Here one of our golden retrievers, Skye, unexpectedly comes upon a pair of American Black Ducks and is poised, mesmerized, at the water’s edge.

There are so many things that I like about this image. The unusual mix of colors (burgundy, blue-gray, muted greens), varied textures (large rocks, gravel, water, fur, trees, feathers, snow), and the captured moment (will Skye plunge in?).

The reference photo was taken by my daughter Caileigh, and the setting is Topsail Round Pond behind Peter Barry Duff Park in Paradise, Newfoundland. Caileigh declared this was to be her painting before I’d even started on it. And lest anyone be concerned, Skye was on a leash, but I left that part out of the painting.

My thanks also to my colleague Jill Cole who, as soon as she saw the photo, was adamant that I should do a painting from it.
