Description:
The view in this painting is at Cape Spear, the easternmost point of North America, looking westward toward the coastline. I love how the perspective can shift from tiny people on a big boat, to a small boat next to a massive iceberg, to a small iceberg overshadowed by a towering, rocky, icy coastline. The little seagull could throw the entire perspective off, except that bird is circling above the iceberg.
I took the reference photo in June 2016. The tour boat also appears in a painting of Fort Amherst titled “Narrows Below;” the reference photo was taken that same day.
I’ve done two other paintings that feature icebergs: “Triumvirate” (which is available as a limited edition giclée) and “Iceberg & Whale.”
