Description:

This is a humpback whale diving off the coast near Bay Bulls, Newfoundland. We were so close that the span of the tail was too great for the view with my zoom lens. I thought of adjusting that for the painting, then realized that having it escape the boundaries just emphasizes its majestic size.

I took the reference photo in July 2017. That whale watching tour has already resulted in the painting “Coloured Water” and there may be more to come from the many photos that I took that day. My thanks to Lisa Dawe who suggested the title.
