Description:
Near the town of Bonavista, Newfoundland, is this natural sea cave that formed over millennia until the roof caved in, leaving two arches. It’s called the Bonavista Dungeon. You will come upon it unexpectedly if you’re looking at the shoreline because the flat ground before you suddenly opens at your feet to reveal this spectacular scene. The ocean waves crash in and recede, and sometimes fountain upwards, creating colors and sound. The formation is technically a blow-hole or gloup: an opening in the roof of a sea cave through which incoming waves may force air to rush upward or water to spout intermittently.
With my last painting, Ragged Rocks, I bemoaned the tedious and lengthy effort it required to capture the myriad details and colors in the endless rocks. But then I went ahead and did another! What was I thinking? For some reason it looked less tedious in my reference photo but it proved not to be. I think I’ll stay away from rock scenes for a while.
My thanks to Lisa for suggesting the title, which evokes the movement of the sea in and out of the dungeon.
