Description:
This is the fifth in a series of paintings on the theme of Newfoundland music. It’s been a while – in fact 2006 – since I last added to it. Doesn’t seem that long ago. I’d always intended to continue the series, but have lacked suitable reference photos of different instruments than what I’d already painted. But I like the violin and kept returning to contemplate a series of photos that were taken when I first started the series.
This isn’t intended to be a portrait. Anyone who knows me is aware that portraits aren’t my thing. I have declared certain conditions under which I would consider doing a portrait, and this painting didn’t meet any of those criteria. The focus here is on the instrument and the scenery. But it’s unavoidable having to paint a face when the subject is playing a violin.
I remain indebted to the team of Woodrows, Janine who orchestrated, her father Richard who played and modeled, and her mother Marie who took the photo, back in 2005.
