Description:
I rarely paint portraits, and it’s been ages since I did anything in black and white. The grayscale imagery certainly gives this painting of a pregnant woman an introspective, moody tone that wouldn’t be conveyed in bright colors.
This is the first of two paintings that will illustrate a forthcoming medical textbook, Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Endocrinology: Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Clinical Management, edited by Christopher S. Kovacs and Cheri L. Deal (Elsevier / Academic Press, 2019). The book is divided into two halves, “The Mother” and “The Child.” This one will be placed after the title page for the first half of the book; it is also featured on the front cover. The two paintings can be considered to form a diptych (a painting in two parts or panels).
I’ve donated both original paintings to the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, where they will be displayed in their offices in Ottawa.
Original painting by Christopher Kovacs based with permission on a reference photo by Vojtech Vlk @ 123RF.com. The title was suggested by Lisa Dawe.
