Description:
This colorful scene with riven reflections of a wharf is in Dildo Cove, Newfoundland. The town’s proper name is Dildo, which sounds naughty but isn’t – although no one seems to know for certain what it’s supposed to mean.
I painted a different scene titled “Dildo Cove” in July 2019, and remarked at the time that the name might have referred to the pin on which an oar pivots, or a cylindrical tube, or something else, but the origin has been long forgotten. I also noted that “residents have endured certain notoriety for the name.” In retrospect that was a bit understated, because shortly afterward, the late night comedy host Jimmy Kimmel heard about Dildo and sent a film crew to do some onsite interviews and gags. Later he was declared honorary mayor, declared Dildo to be Hollywood’s sister city, and had a large Dildo sign erected in the hills to echo that of the iconic sign in Hollywood. And in 2020 he declared “this has gone too far” when the pandemic necessitated the cancellation of the 2020 Dildo Days celebration.
