Description:

This solitary home comes with a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. I always like a bit of humor in the titles of my paintings, which is why the real estate phrasing “comes with ocean view” came to mind. If the car brakes fail, the next stop is a wet plunge.

The location is Port de Grave, a 10 kilometer long and narrow peninsula in Newfoundland that juts into the Atlantic. It includes communities with such quaint names such as Bareneed, Ship Cove, Blow Me Down, Black Duck Pond, and Pick Eyes. I’ve previously painted scenes in the community of Hibbs Cove and the lighthouse at Green Point.

Port de Grave has been used by fishermen since the 16th century, and is an active site for the fishing industry in Newfoundland even today. The name comes from French fishermen who dried their catch on beaches, and named one of them Graves.
