Description:
I’m not a boating person, but I enjoy painting scenes of boats and their reflections. This one is almost still life, with a sea-worn boat waiting patiently for its owner to return. The surrounding structures are suggested by their reflections.
The scene is the small fishing community of New Bonaventure, which is located on the northeastern shore of Trinity Bay. Its official population was under 60 people at last count some 70 years ago (the census no longer identifies it separately), and likely fewer now given many empty buildings. It was the location where the 2001 film The Shipping News was filmed, which starred Kevin Spacey, Judi Dench, and Julianne Moore. The film was based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Annie Proulx. Nearby is the site where the 2002 TV mini series Random Passage was filmed, which in turn was based on a novel by Bernice Morgan. The buildings constructed for Random Passage have been maintained and are a frequent tourist destination for visitors to the larger communities of Trinity and Bonavista.
My thanks to Lisa for suggesting the title of this one.
