Watercolour painting requires working in many layers. I’m trying to show some of that by this and the next image. This image shows the first few washes of colour on the island. I don’t know how many layers it took – it’s not something I would want to count – but it is simply a matter of working with paint, water and paper until it looks right. Many of the washes have to be done after waiting for the first layer to dry, whereas others are done with the paper still wet.
